Join a mission-driven team at the heart of California’s civic landscape! The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) is seeking a Communications Assistant to support how we connect with our members, the Capitol community and the public. The Communications Assistant contributes to CSAC’s Public Affairs and Member Engagement efforts to highlight county stories, elevate county priorities within the Capitol community, and communicate the value of county government to the public. This role is essential in advancing CSAC’s mission to represent and serve California’s 58 counties with clarity, consistency, and impact.

The ideal candidate for this role is organized, detail-oriented, tech and social media savvy, and eager to contribute to a dynamic team environment.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based at our Sacramento office and requires minimal travel.

Job Duties         

  • Drafts content for newsletters, web articles, and social media about timely policy updates, resources and opportunities.
  • Assists in developing narrative-driven materials such as member spotlights, event recaps and success stories that showcase county leadership and innovation.
  • Supports the creation of talking points, fact sheets and message frameworks to reach our core audiences.
  • Compiles content for reports, presentations, and publications that demonstrate CSAC’s advocacy impact.
  • Builds and maintains event microsites, registration pages, and accurate contact databases to ensure members can easily access and engage with CSAC resources.
  • Monitors, tracks and distributes news clips of CSAC and counties.
  • Monitors and analyzes engagement metrics across owned and shared media channels and creates standardized reports/dashboards for internal use.
  • Maintains and updates CSAC’s website, calendars and shared resources.
  • Provides administrative and logistical support for webinars, conferences, and events that bring the county family together.
  • Contributes to cross-departmental initiatives and projects that advance CSAC’s mission and support.

 Distinguishing Characteristics                                                                                            

This position provides essential day-to-day support to CSAC’s communications efforts. By managing information, coordinating communications and supporting member interactions, the role helps strengthen CSAC’s connection with its members and enhances the organization’s ability to share the County story, deliver meaningful events, and maintain strong relationships across California’s 58 counties. 

Knowledge & Skills Required 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write, edit, and proofread clearly and concisely for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency with digital and social media platforms, email marketing tools, content management systems (CMS), and association management software (AMS).
  • Familiarity with modern office procedures, collaboration tools, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Proficiency in maintaining records, databases and distribution lists.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, critical thinking skills, and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of local government functions and public sector communications (preferred).

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally throughout California and work occasional evenings and weekends for member events or outreach.
